The pricing model itself
Onyx vs checkouts that take a percentage
A cut of revenue is the easiest price to say yes to and the hardest to leave. It costs nothing while you are small and becomes your second largest bill exactly when the store starts working.
There is a second cost that never appears in the pricing table: many of these tools put merchants under one shared payments account.
| Percentage-based checkouts | Onyx Checkout | |
|---|---|---|
| What they charge | 1–3% of every order | $79 / month, flat |
| Cost when you scale | Rises with every sale | Unchanged |
| Whose payments account | Often theirs, or shared | Opened in your name |
| If another merchant is flagged | A shared account can take you with it | Nothing touches you |
| Leaving | Depends on the contract | Remove the script, the old checkout is back |
Figures from each provider’s published pricing, checked September 2026. Everything in the Onyx column is in the product today. Card processing is charged by your payments account in every case, including ours.
On your numbers, not on an example.
Drag your monthly revenue across. Every figure is the monthly cost of the checkout itself — what the card processor charges is separate, and you pay it either way.

When Percentage-based checkouts is the right answer
A percentage is not automatically a bad deal: if a tool earns you more than it costs, keep it. Just price it at the revenue you are aiming for, and check whose account the money lands in.
